Greg Ayers, PhD

Dr. Ayers has over 30 years of experience working with medical device and biotechnology start-up companies, bringing value to over 23 companies. He began his research career when he was an undergraduate student at Purdue University. He was involved in evaluating the use of defibrillation to treat sudden cardiac arrest, including the first implantable defibrillators. His first company, InControl, Inc., was the developer of the first implantable atrial defibrillator, where he served as Vice President of Clinical Affairs. He then joined MPM Capital as a venture partner when he founded CryoCor, a medical technology company that developed products using cryogenic technology to treat abnormal heart rhythms. While at MPM, in addition to CryoCor, he served as medical director, interim CEO or member of the board of directors for 9 MPM portfolio companies. Dr Ayers is also co-founder of IMedPro, a German based consulting company for small US companies seeking European approval for their medical products. He consulted for Heartstream, the company that pioneered AEDs (automatic external defibrillator) and participated in securing “over the counter” designation for wider adoption as a part of CPR. He is a founder and Executive and Chairman of the Board of SonarMed, Inc. an Indianapolis based medical device company. He was the interim CEO of ViewRay, company focused on MRI guided radiotherapy for various types of cancer. In his most recent corporate role, he served as Chief of Medical Affairs, Head of Post Market Surveillance and Head of Product Quality and Technology Integration for Philips Medical. Dr Ayers recently retired and went back to clinical practice as a paramedic in Vancouver Washington and in 3 counties in Oregon, including the greater Portland metropolitan area. Dr. Ayers has received numerous awards, including Outstanding Alumnus of Engineering at Purdue University. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and Heart Rhythm Society. He holds 21 U.S. patents, and has published over 200 book chapters, scientific abstracts and manuscripts. Dr. Ayers received his B.S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Purdue University, and his M.D. from Indiana University.
